New York City Transit 207th Street Facility
New York City Transit's 207th Street Overhaul Shop, one of the world's largest transit rail maintenance facility, has been in continuous operation for 65 years without the benefit of a full-scale modernization. As a result, the shop is functionally obsolete in that it was poorly configured and ill equipped to meet the demands of the new technology subway car fleets.

MDG is an integral member of the multi-disciplined design team to provide input regarding functional and equipment-related issues. These issues include shop flow efficiency, car hoist configuration, shop layout, crane systems, and materials handling systems. Innovative solutions are being developed to improve shop environment, space utilization, and operational efficiency.

When completed, this facility will service approximately 2,500 rail cars in a 400,000-square-foot facility.

Lancaster, California - AVTA Operations and Maintenance Facility
The Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) identified the need to plan and design a new operations and maintenance facility to accommodate its growing fleet of transit, commuter, and paratransit buses. The project, master planned to provide a facility to accommodate a fleet of about 170 buses, was developed to allow construction in two phases.

Construction documents are being prepared for the first phase which will provide a facility to house administration, operations, maintenance, and vehicle servicing functions for a 100-bus fleet. The facility is designed to be owned by AVTA and occupied by its contract operator. MDG was selected to provide comprehensive planning and design services for the new operations and maintenance facility.

West Covina, California - Foothill Transit Irwindale Operations and Maintenance Facility
Foothill Transit identified the need to plan and design a new operations and maintenance facility to accommodate its growing fleet of transit vehicles and buses. The project is being master planned and construction documents are being prepared for a facility to house administration, operations, maintenance, and vehicle servicing functions for a 150-bus fleet.

The facility is designed to be owned by Foothill Transit and occupied by its contract operator. MDG was selected to provide comprehensive planning and design services for the new operations and maintenance facility.

Houston, Texas - Houston METRO - Downtown to Astro-dome Light Rail Transit Project
MDG, acting as the Task Leader for the Preliminary Design of the Operations and Maintenance Facility and Yard, worked closely with the C&B Light Rail Project Team. MDG also worked with the project's architect, HOK (Dallas and Houston), and the yard track layout specialist, LTK (Portland, OR), to develop a site and yard layout that best utilizes the 25-acre site.

The team participated in a three-day on-site charrette to develop concept building plans. The concept facility includes approximately 100,000 square feet of parts and material storage, five LRV repair positions, a dedicated wheel truing position, specialized mezzanine level shops, an LRV paint booth, a specialized LRV body repair position, two interior cleaning positions, an automated drive-through LRV exterior washer, and elevated work platforms that allow access to the roof-mounted equipment common on low-floor LRV's. The facility also includes dedicated administrative and support areas for up to 140 operators and 45 mechanics.

Aurora, Colorado - Citywide Facilities Master Plan Document
Aurora is Colorado's third largest City and in recent years has grown rapidly at the edge of metropolitan Denver. Because of its size, Aurora has had one central and two satellite corporate yard facilities. City expansion has put a strain on municipal service facilities at these three sites. RNL Design and Mainten-ance Design Group are involved in programming and master planning all three sites and the City services operating from them. Identification of a third satellite may be necessary. The project will require an on-site design charrette for each site.

Mesa, Arizona - Transit Maintenance Facility
The City of Mesa manages a transit system which is operated by a private contractor. The fleet is comprised of CNG buses which are fueled and maintained out of the City's East Service Center. MDG was selected as an integral member of a multi-disciplined design team to develop current space needs requirements, prepare a site master plan, and develop functional and equipment requirements for a new transit operations and maintenance facility. This facility, to be used by the contractor, will provide capacity for 100 buses initially with an ultimate capacity of 200 buses. A 200-car park n' ride is also located on the 22-acre site.

San Jose, California - Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)
C&B's PM/CM Division was awarded this contract for an extensive facility expansion program. MDG assigned Mary Mangnuson to be its on-site program manager to provide review of design work and provide input to design teams for this program projected to take six years to complete.

Monterey, California - Salinas Transit
MDG provided programming, master planning and conceptual design services for this new consolidated administration, operations, maintenance and fueling facility project. This facility will accommodate 150 to 200 transit buses and will include CNG fueling and maintain CNG buses.
